L-Carnitine and Acetyl-L-Carnitine
L-Carnitine is naturally occurring in all mammalian species and is found in almost all cells. The human pool of L-Carnitine is around 20 grams with 98% of this within the cardiac and skeletal muscle pool. L-Carnitine was isolated for the first time from muscle tissue in 1905. The essential role of L-Carnitine in the utilization of long chain fatty acids for energy is accepted. The latest research has found that L-Carnitine can actually increase fatty acid oxidation in healthy adults.
Clinical research has discovered that L-Carnitine has a beneficial role in muscle function, exercise, fatty acid metabolism, supplementation for vegetarians, sperm function, mental function and anti aging.
Exercise
Studies in athletes have shown that L-Carnitine supplementation may improve exercise performance. Reducing Body fat
CLA has two main sites of action: adipose tissue, the main site of fat storage, and skeletal muscle tissue, the principle site where fat is burned for energy. It has been proposed that CLA decreases body fat mass by inhibiting the amount of fat deposited after a meal, increasing the rate of fat degradation, while at the same time increasing the rate at which muscle cells burn fat to generate energy.
Recently, it has been demonstrated that daily CLA supplementation reduces the abdominal diameter in obese subjects as well as markers of endothelial dysfunction. Other new findings suggest that CLA may play a critical role in reducing the cumulative weight and fat gain that occurs with aging. Moreover, CLA is reported to slightly increase resting metabolic rate without stimulating the central nervous system (no jitters). During calorie restricting diets, metabolic rates usually decrease. CLA supplementation assists in preventing the yo-yo effects by increasing lean body muscle mass, thus increasing resting metabolic rate.
Immune modulation
There is evidence that adipose tissue produces and secretes circulating 'inflammatory' mediators like TNF-α that may trigger a number of chronic conditions such as atherosclerosis, hypertension and hyperlipidemia. In obese subjects, levels of these mediators are significantly higher compared to non-obese.
